FIRST PAN AFRICAN SUPPLY CHAIN RESEARCH INSTITUTE LAUNCHED

On the 13th August 2019, the first Pan African Supply chain management research institute was launched at the Kgorong Function Hall, University of South Africa (Unisa), Muckleneuk Campus, Pretoria. The inaugural launch seeks to sensitise the African community of the value proposition of its operations in its quest to transform supply chain management practices in the continent. The event is expected to attract approximately 500 supply chain professionals across the continent including dignitaries from civil society as well as international organisations.

Reputable speakers will present practical cases on how organisations have gained a competitive advantage through supply chain management research. The program of the day will also include a discussion on how research has informed sound reforms and transformation through effective policy implementation in public institutions. The launch of the AISCR will provide organisations with an opportunity to be directly involved with the institute by means of partnerships, sponsorship of research projects and to host special supply chain events of interest.

The AISCR is a Pan African dedicated non-profit, research institute that conducts innovative research on supply chain management to support continental-wide sustainable development and inclusive growth. The institute also aims to create a centre of knowledge and excellence for supply chain management. The rationale for establishment of the research institute is that the strategic role of supply chain management within organisations and the continent requires specific focus and elevation. However, the importance of supply chain management, its strategic impact is generally underrated, and the activity is not accorded the professional education accreditation status it deserves. There are few universities in the continent that offer supply chain management degrees especially research-based masters and doctoral degrees. Similarly, professional organisations and institutes focusing on supply chain management research are limited. It is therefore critical to create an institute of knowledge and excellence for supply chain management that will be beneficial to relevant professionals, government and organisations in the continent. The establishment of the research institute is in line with the strategic priorities of the National Development Plan (NDP) 2030 and Africa Agenda 2063, “the Africa we want”. The programme of the launch will be disseminated in due course.

Established in 2019, the African Institute for Supply Chain Research (AISCR) provides supply chain research, education, outreach, and networking solutions for a better Africa.
