Africa’s Energy Moment: From Disruption to Opportunity

Africa Supply Chain Insights Bulletin – April 2026 (Issue 1)

From Disruption to Opportunity in Africa’s Energy Systems

The Africa Supply Chain Insights Bulletin is a new monthly initiative by AISCR, developed in collaboration with Desiderio Consultants, to provide concise, insight-driven analysis of key trends shaping supply chains across the continent.

The inaugural issue focuses on Africa’s evolving energy landscape, highlighting how recent global disruptions are exposing structural vulnerabilities while simultaneously creating new opportunities for regional transformation.

Across the continent, persistent challenges remain, fuel shortages, price volatility, and fragmented supply systems. These issues are not isolated; they reflect deeper structural constraints, including limited refining capacity, infrastructure bottlenecks, and weak cross-border coordination. At the same time, important developments are reshaping the outlook. Strategic investments such as Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery are strengthening regional supply potential, while the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is opening new pathways for intra-African energy trade.

However, the key insight from this issue is clear:

The challenge is not only increasing supply -but improving how the system works.

Unlocking Africa’s energy potential will require:

  • Coordinated regional infrastructure
  • Harmonized policies and regulatory frameworks
  • Stronger institutional alignment across markets

The bulletin underscores the need to move from fragmented national approaches toward integrated regional systems capable of delivering resilience, stability, and long-term value.

This first issue sets the foundation for a broader conversation on how Africa can strengthen its supply chains, not only by responding to disruptions, but by building systems that are more coordinated, adaptive, and future-ready.
