Statement by AISCR President on the Corona Virus (COVID-19) Pandemic

Dear Supply Chain Professionals

We are experiencing one of the most disruptive era in our lives. We trust that you are home and safe. In addition to the severe implications for people’s health and safety, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is having a significant impact on supply chains and the global economy. The impact of supply chains can be seen in:

  • Government restrictions amid to mitigate the spread of the virus,
  • Limited access to employees due to quarantine and potential loss of jobs,
  • Limited operating hours and goods are not being produced to full capacity,
  • Suppliers of customised products are at risk of losing market shares,
  • Closure of businesses or manufacturing slowdowns and
  • Limited access to logistics movements and financial implications.

Supply chain professionals will need to assess the impact of COVID-19 in their organisations and develop mitigating strategies thereof. This will require a mind-set shift. We have lagged in terms of the fourth industrial revolution (industry 4.0). Perhaps this period is propelling us to seriously look at fully embracing industry 4.0 and leverage on its benefits. South Africa and the continent at large are yet to fully leverage on the potential of industry 4.0. With the COVID-19 pandemic, our normalcy has transformed overnight, and economies have been dealt a major blow. Virtual is the new buzz word in almost all aspects of our lives and economy.

At AISCR we are optimistic that this disruption will pass. We will go back to normalcy with better resiliency. Therefore, we are committed to bringing knowledge that will add value and make the fundamental difference in our profession. We do this taking cognisance of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we think this situation is a great lesson. We will have a better supply chain network that is resilient, agile and reliable. We are virtually open and available to assist and answer any questions you may have during this period. We urge you to follow developments of the research institute and join us for online surveys, upcoming virtual roundtables and seminars on topical issues.
