The special issue aims to explore and showcase cutting-edge research on the challenges and emerging trends in the field of logistics and supply chain management in Africa.
Logistics and supply chain management play a crucial role in today’s global business environment and Africa, offering significant advantages and addressing various challenges. With Africa’s diverse landscapes, unique wildlife, and vast mineral resources, the continent has the potential to be a major player in the global economy. However, the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the dire economic and social consequences of Africa’s commodity-led export model and overreliance on imported manufactured goods. Africa’s logistics sector suffers from inadequate infrastructure such as roads, railways, and ports, which limits the movement of goods within and outside the continent. Other logistics and supply chain challenges faced by the continent include cross-border trade barriers, limited technology adaptation, logistics and supply chain integration, skills development, inadequate warehousing, and storage facilities, as well as regulatory complexities. Intra-African trade is merely 13 percent which is low when compared to intra-regional trade achieved by Europe at 60 percent, North America at 40 percent, and Asia at 30 percent. The reason for low intra-African trade is attributed to the poor quality of roads and weak transport infrastructure amidst protectionist trade policies. As nations within the continent begin with the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), there is potential for the logistics and supply chain industry to thrive and boost intra-African trade, provided it is pumped with more finance, customs cooperation and requisite infrastructure. This special issue therefore aims to address these challenges contributing to positive impacts on trade, employment, innovation, and overall socio-economic development across the continent.
The Guest Editors will be inviting substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the African Institute for Supply Chain Research Annual Conference (AISCR-2024), for review and potential publication, but are also inviting other experts to submit articles for this call.
